tissue box covers (2008)

I’ve only made 3 so far, and taken photos of 2.

The first 2 pictures are of a box I made of traditional washi paper.

The successive pictures are of a box I’m currently putting in the Etsy market for potential buyers -as much as I don’t want to give it away, gotta get out of my comfort zone and give it a try! This box is a little different… every picture was cut out and pasted. It did take a while, but hey, it was fun!

Cello (2008)

…and here’s the cello from the trio set.

Violin (2008)

This came with the piano and cello as a trio set.

Box haven (2008)

I like using them, making them, admiring them. Yes, boxes are an organizer’s best friend…

Name-card box

I just moved to a new place, and everything was everywhere -including the name-cards I’ve collected over the years! So, I made a box to store them. Simple.

Miscellaneous box

My partner wanted to give lollies to a friend, but the packing was quite unforgiving. So, what else but to make a box to put them in?

My Valentine

So it was Valentine’s Day, and I was broke. However, it does not discount the fact that i still want to contribute to the commercial world of ‘hey-let’s-make-a-day-to-proclaim-our-love-day’, namely so that I, nor he, will feel left-out. There was a few smarties left in the pantry…hmm, what should I do with them…?

Something for home (2008)

I just got inspired! It got me to make another box -this time, with chiyogami paper ordered from Japan. It’s so fun!

Evolution of the piano (2008)

At a time in my life where I played on the display pianos in Allan’s Music store just to quelch my desire to have a piano, I decided to take this to another level: if I can’t buy one, I’ll make one. I guess that’s where you can say how my modeling making chapter began.

So, I began my first model by making a grand piano, modeled on the Yamaha baby grand. That was October, 2006. Within two years, I have made two more piano models, this time based on the Steinway grands. You can see how my skills have definitely improved! In other words…practice, practice, practice!

It was a wedding gift for my partner’s sister.

My third piano

As you can see, this piano came as a trio set -piano, violin and cello. I pretty much made the cello and violin out of the same cardboard and paper as the piano, although I had to mix the colours and paint it onto what was originally a white/brown surface.

             Piano, violin, cello

The trio was ordered by a friend who wanted to give it as a gift to her parents. She comes from a family of three -and all three plays a different instrument (piano, violin, cello). Since all the children are pretty much overseas most of the time, my friend wanted to give a gift that signifies each child, to remind their parents that they are loved. Don’t you think that’s such an awesome gift? i definitely enjoyed making this for her!

This ain’t a killing game… (2008)

Most of my friends are with the University of Melbourne Kendo Club. Upon request, I gave my partner (also a Kendo member) this 日本刀 (Japanese sword). The finishing product was a result of four attempts to shave the blade as evenly as I could -since, shaving two ultra-thick pieces of cardboard was pretty challenging

And yes, you can place it into its sheath! That was another challenge to be celebrated.

O Birdies (2008)

These birds were an inspiration from some site I came across that instructed the making of birds by the art of  folding. I decided to move away from origami to experiment with cutting and pasting pieces of coloured felt and embossed paper. What was initially one bird, became a couple. I also added a red bow (made of paper, of course) and some eye lashes to the girl one…can you see that?

Eventually, I put them on eBay, just to see what people’s responses are like. In a few days, it was sold! I guess it was great that people would want to buy it; although at the same time, I had trouble parting with them.

In the end, there is always a connection between you and what you create.

The Lady (2008)

She was one of the first models where I experimented with Chiyogami paper. By using 3 sheets of 5″ by 5″, her kimono was folded and wrapped around a piece of wire. Her hair was the most interesting part to make…

I decided to give it to a little girl I know (6 years old). Seeing her smile just about made this hobby even more worthwhile.
